Games
Snorkeling provides opportunities to play a number of games that will improve your skills and understanding of the sport. Some are just fun to have in a controlled swimming pool environment, others are sports with governing bodies and are played as a competitive league or tournament.
Obstacle Course
As the name suggests, using bars, weighted hoops and bricks, a marine obstical course is created either to be run individually, or in teams as a relay race.
Treasure Hunt
Always a popular game, with 2 equal numbers of coins being deposited in the pool, with the first team to recover all their coins being made the winner.
Snorkel Sharing
Exactly as the name suggests, this is a game where 1 or more snorkels are passed amongst a number of divers. Usually picked up by taking out the snorkel, passing it around your back and then re-attaching it on your own, before it progresses to 1 snorkel shared between 2 snorkelers. This can progress upward depending on abilities, but it is not unheard of to have 2 snorkels continually passed around 6 people!
Octopush
Also known as underwater hockey, octopush is an increasingly popular, fast-paced team game. Played with six on each team, the object of the game is to push a lead puck (called a squid) into the opponents’ goal. This is all done whilst diving down underwater, so snorkel skills are essential.
There are a number of clubs in the UK that happily welcome new players to the sport, and the British Octopush Association has plenty of information about how to get involved.
